Pat-Bishop-600Pat boxed competitively from 1963 to 1971 at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels, trained by Billy Fields (Central Hawkes Bay Boxing Association) Waipukurau and Gibb Roper (Waikato Boxing Association) at the Waimapu Gym, Tauranga.

 

In 1967 and 1968 Pat won numerous provincial boxing championships and was runner up in the NZ Junior Championship in 1968.

 

In 1969 and 1970 Pat regularly won awards for being “the most scientific boxer” at many boxing tournaments and boxed often in Tauranga and the surrounding districts.

Pat then took a break from boxing and in 1974 began his interest in martial arts when he started training in Shotokan Karate. Trained by:

 

Dave Wynd - 1st Kyu from 1974 – 1975, and Paul Burke - Shodan from 1976 – 1980. Pat was graded Brown Belt in karate in February 1979.

 

From 1980 to 1982 Pat trained in Nam Wah Pai Gung Fu. Trained by Steven Kitson 7th Degree. Pat was graded as a Black Belt 1st Degree instructor in Nam Wah Pai in December 1980.

 

Pat was placed first in the Senior Men’s Championship in the 1982 NZ Nam Wah Pai Pugilistic Tournament.

 

In 1982 Pat turned the full circle and started a small home gym at Mt Maunganui teaching a mixture of martial arts and boxing. He then began competing in the ‘full contact’ tournaments in Auckland in 1982 (run by Auckland’s Philip Lam – the father of NZ Kick Boxing) winning four of his seven fights in the light-weight division at the Auckland YMCA.

 

Thereafter, Pat trained competitors for these tournaments and others. Pat started to train boys for boxing tournaments from his new gym in Tauranga from February 1985. During this time he trained privately with Master Bobby Taboada in the Philippino Martial Art of Ballintawak (a stick fighting style from the Philippines.

 

Since 1982 Pat has produced competitors in Boxing, Kick Boxing and Muay Thai around New Zealand with much success, including NZ Champions in all three disciplines, both amateur and professional. He has also organised, assisted and officiated at many boxing and kick boxing tournaments over the years.

 

In 1998 and 1999 Pat trained privately in the Northern Shaolin Long Fist System – Chang Chuan Tang Lang (Long Fist Praying Mantis) - a traditional northern Chinese Gung Fu martial art, trained by Sifu (teacher) Peter (Peewee) Houghton. In 1999 and 2000 Pat studied privately in the old Yang-style of Tai Chi Chuan under Sifu (teacher) Anne Godfrey.

 

In 2014 Pat set up a small gym at his home in Tauranga and in 2015 is again teaching the noble arts.

 

Pat is also a member of the Central North Island Boxing Association (Inc.) promoting amateur boxing across New Zealand.
